Park City mogulist Nick Page is debuting a new helmet for the Milan Olympics next month.

Page worked alongside Salt Lake City artist and auto detailer Jeff Permain to create the Captain America-themed lid, because the Games don’t allow for sponsorship logos on helmets, and the Parkite has the Deer Valley logo on the front of his helmet for this season.

The now two-time Olympian said that he chose the Marvel superhero character because he felt connected to it growing up. Permain, who Page located several years ago, has done multiple Captain America helmet designs for him in the past. The design is a break from the deck of cards that have been featured on Page’s last two seasons’ helmets, reminding him of the good times he’s had playing poker in Las Vegas with his friends and to always bet on himself, he said.

“When I was little, I would always paint a helmet to look like a Captain America shield,” Page said. “So, I was thinking for this Olympics it’d be cool to do something that throws back a little to when I was a kid and reminds me of the kid that started out and the big dreams that I had back then that are now coming to life.”

Page’s new helmet will soon be lighting up the Livigno slopes on Feb. 12 and 15, when he competes in the solo and dual moguls Olympic events, respectively. Page finished in fifth place in the solo moguls competition at the 2022 Beijing Games, and is a medal contender once again, ranked third in the world.

Two trails are about to get a lot easier to reach.

Monday through Thursday, the 9 Purple will run normally, stopping at its usual point at Montage Deer Valley from 5:36 a.m.-6:06 p.m. with a 30-minute frequency. No change. 

Then, Fridays through Sundays through the fall, the route will extend to Empire Pass and stop at the Bonanza Flat and Blood Lake trailheads from 5:40 a.m.-6:20 p.m. with increased 20-minute frequency. 

“It’ll alleviate congestion, get cars off the road, help with the parking problems up here and allow more recreation access for our community to enjoy,” said Park City Council member Jeremy Rubell. 

Buses serving the trails are equipped with new bike racks that can carry up to eight bikes, and dogs are allowed as long as they’re muzzled and well behaved. Park City Transit will even provide the muzzle thanks to a pilot project with the city.

Just promise you’ll clean up after them, Rubell said. 

With the service comes another big change: paid parking at the Bonanza Flat and Blood Lake trailheads. Council member Bill Ciraco said the city wanted to find a way to encourage recreation in these areas that didn’t also balloon congestion and vehicle emissions. 

“We’ve got 1,300 acres up here at Bonanza Flat, quite a bit,” said council member Bill Ciraco. “But the last thing we want to do is have 1,000 or 2,000 parking spots up here.”

Part of the thinking is that Parkites make up only about 8% of the trail usage, according to Ciraco. Seventy to 75 percent comes from the Wasatch Front. Offering free, frequent transit allows residents to access the trails and avoid the cost themselves. 

“We have this amazing resource that our community paid for, and it was getting loved to death,” Ciraco said. “It was hard for people in our community to use it and enjoy it.”

Plus, paid parking will ideally cover the extra cost to transit, Ciraco said. 

“I’m not going to make any promises, but based on what we’ve seen so far, I’m pretty confident that our parking revenue up here will pay for a good portion of our transit up here,” Ciraco said. “So we’ll be pretty close to it being a net zero.”

Residents can get a parking pass through the city if they want, though, and the city is looking into a season-pass type program for the broader community, Rubell said. 

“The city does also recognize that more than folks who live in the city proper have contributed to this conservation effort, and we want to make sure everyone can enjoy the fruits of their labor,” he said.

Utah Open Lands representatives were also at the Bonanza Flat trailhead Thursday for the launch of the service. Park City acquired the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area in 2017 for $38 million, partnering with Utah Open Lands, Mountain Trails Foundation and 11 other nonprofit organizations, as well as several counties.

“We shouldn’t be sitting here with cars idling and fumes going in the air,” Rubell said. “We shouldn’t be running over the vegetation, driving the wildlife out.”

If there’s a state championship game, best believe the Miners girls lacrosse squad is going to be in it. Tuesday morning at Westminster University, Park City dominated Cedar Valley to advance to their fifth-straight title game.

While Cedar Valley kept things relatively respectable, the Miners jumped all over another opponent. Cedar Valley entered the game 13-7, fresh off three playoff wins — by the second quarter they trailed 7-0. By the halftime break, Park City had stretched that lead to 13-0.

The Miners tacked on three more third quarter goals and another in the fourth. Cedar Valley finally found the back of the Park City net in the fourth quarter. For the 38th-best team in the nation, it’s their seventh win by at least 16 goals.

Senior Megan Magee again lit up the stat sheet, scoring four goals and assisting on three more. Ten Park City players recorded a point in the dominant win.

“The girls came ready to play today,” said Miners head coach Mikki Clayton. “It was a great team win.”

Clayton was pleased with the way her team worked the ball around Tuesday. They dominated possession, allowing their defense to rest when needed and pitch the shutout.

Two Park City goalkeepers anchored the suffocating defense in starter Marcella Woolley and Mckinsey Darling. Clayton said her keepers, backups and team are peaking at the perfect moment.

“She (Woolley) played phenomenal,” added Clayton. “Mckinsey, our freshman goalie, also played really well.”

The Miners will need to be firing on all cylinders in the title game, where they’ll face the Salem Hills, Olympus, winner, who took the field after them. Salem Hills is 19-1, 5A’s second seed, and Olympus is the defending state champion, having defeated Park City in that title game. While the Miners have taken down Olympus with relative ease both at home and on the road this season, they’d surely love to exact some championship game revenge.

Park City took down Olympus in the 2023 state title game, also falling to them in 2022. It must feel like an uphill battle for anyone other than the Miners and Titans to make that game.

“Today they’re just going to enjoy the win and each others’ company” Clayton said. “Tomorrow, we’ll get focused.”

Park City will work on getting their minds right and fine tuning some little things for the title game. The championship game will begin Thursday at 1 p.m. at Herriman’s Zions Bank Stadium.

“That always stings to lose your last game, and to a rival,” Clayton said about last year’s title game loss. “We love playing Olympus. They’re great competition. We’re ready to take it back this year.”

Thursday night under the Dozier Field lights, the Miners boys lacrosse squad took on crosstown opponent Wasatch in the second round of the 5A playoffs.

Wasatch was coming in hot off a first round playoff victory on Tuesday. Park City, well, they hadn’t laced up their cleats for nearly a week, receiving a first round bye as the third seed.

If there was any rust, the Miners certainly didn’t let it show, jumping all over Wasatch from the jump. Park City scored five first-quarter goals and four in the second. By halftime, the game was halfway on ice.

The Miners scored three third-quarter goals before Wasatch put two in the back of their net to close the game.

“Wasatch is a pretty good team,” said Park City head coach Michael Persky. “We just had a really good day today.”

Nobody had a better day than the Alnwick family, with sibling duo Henry and Billy each netting two goals in the game. Senior Billy also tacked on an assist. 13 different Miners got in on the scoring action with either a goal or assist.

“Kids played well all over the field,” Persky added about his team. “One of the great things about this team is there’s a lot of great guys who work really hard.”

Persky said Reece Smith and Wade Birch were also top performers, per usual for his team. Park City also played two goalies in Max Gordon and Henry Birch, each of whom Persky credited with strong performances.

The Miners will need continued contributions from across the board if they want to make a deep run again through the state tournament. They’ve got Northridge up next on Saturday afternoon, again on Dozier Field.

“We just have to keep focusing on one game at a time,” Persky said. “We’ve just got to keep playing better and better everyday.”

If the Miners are able to dispatch Northridge, they’ll advance to next Wednesday’s semifinals at Westminster University. To follow the rest of the 5A playoffs, see MaxPrep’s website.

Although considered a rival by the Miners lacrosse programs, Alta wasn’t much competition for the girls team Thursday afternoon as they cruised to a 23-4 victory on Dozier Field.

Nationally ranked Park City didn’t leave their opponents much room to breathe, opening up a 11-1 lead before they could blink. By the halftime mark, that lead had ballooned to an untenable 17-1 situation. The Miners tacked on six second-half goals for some good ‘ole icing on the cake.

It’s possible Park City sought to remind the rest of the 5A bracket that they’re not going anywhere after nearly a week long layoff. The Miners are the playoff’s top seed, and an overwhelming favorite to claim a third state title in the program’s short-lived history.

Junior Coco Crawford was one of many stars Thursday for Park City. While Crawford had a hat trick, the team had 13 additional goal scorers. Seven Miners assisted on goals, with Sophia Mondschein having an assists hat trick to go along with her two goals.

“It was a great team win,” said Park City head coach Mikki Clayton. “We’ve been working with the girls all week to really play as a team and selflessly.”

Clayton felt like the dominant win was emblematic of the work her team put in during the week of practices. The Miners have been incredibly balanced all year, with nine different players having scored double-digit points.

While Park City knows this team has special potential, they’re taking a day-by-day approach. Clayton and her staff have been telling the team that everyday they get to spend together in these playoffs is a blessing in itself.

“We are obviously looking forward to putting ourselves in a great position to be in the state championship game again,” Clayton added. “But, we want to make sure we’re focused on every single task at hand — and that we take all of our opponents very seriously.”

Clayton almost laughed saying her team is hitting their stride at the right time. The Miners lost one game this season, in March to out-of-state Foothill — they’re 17-1.

Park City’s next task is moving past eighth-seeded West Jordan Saturday afternoon, again on Dozier. The Miners took them down 16-3 April 30 on the road.

If Park City takes care of business Saturday, they’ll find themselves in Tuesday’s semifinals at Westminster University. A potential 2022, 2023 and 2024 state title game rematch with rival Olympus still hangs in the balance. The Miners would be all too happy to get their shot at some revenge, after falling in the 2024 game. The team has defeated the Titans twice with ease already this season.

“It is certainly shaping up that way,” Clayton said. “It’ll be interesting.”
