The votes are in, and Wasatch County School District has announced survey results for the county’s new high school name and mascot: Deer Creek High School, championed by the Riverhawks.
The school colors are navy, silver and white.
“The Riverhawks showcase the osprey’s presence in Wasatch County; this symbol embodies ambition, strength, and precision,” a Wasatch County School District Facebook post read. “Known for their prowess as fearless hunters, these remarkable birds of prey thrive along the Provo River and Deer Creek Reservoir.”
The announcement follows a two-month process of naming, then un-naming, the new high school.
The board initially named the institution Iron Horse High School, with “Thunder” as the mascot, at a Dec. 17 work session meeting. That decision was swiftly followed by an overwhelming community response, which included an online petition requesting a “revote” that garnered more than 700 signatures.
“By demanding a revote, we are not undermining any administrative decision but are advocating for broader representation and participation within our community,” Lynne Allred, who started the petition, wrote in the description online.
Parents got their wish for increased community input earlier this month, when the board sent a letter announcing a new survey including four final proposed names and mascots: Deer Creek High School Riverhawks, North Field High School Riverhawks, Heber Valley High School Riverhawks and Iron Horse High School Thunder.
The board emphasized that the survey would be sent to staff, students, parents and community members.
The decision to christen the new school Deer Creek High School was finalized through ranked-choice voting on Jan. 19. The Riverhawks mascot was chosen in the same fashion and finalized Monday.
“We are deeply grateful for the active participation of our community in shaping the future of Deer Creek High School,” the school district Facebook post reads. “This collaboration exemplifies the pride, unity and shared vision that makes our district so special.”
Justin Kelly, Wasatch High School’s former principal, assumed his new role as head principal of the newly named Deer Creek High School on Jan. 2. Kelly was tapped for the role in December, when Ryan Bishop was also selected to step into Kelly’s shoes.
Kelly leaves his role as head principal of Wasatch High School after four years.
