Summit County Dispatch alerted area law enforcement about a car driving carelessly on westbound Interstate 80 near mile marker 146 on Saturday.
A caller said the vehicle was all over the roadway and flashing its lights, according to an affidavit of probable cause. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was able to locate the car on the highway and initiate a traffic stop.
The trooper approached the driver, who was later identified as a 34-year-old man. He displayed signs of impairment and smelled strongly of alcohol. The man agreed to participate in a standardized field sobriety test, which he performed poorly on.
He also agreed to provide a breath sample. It was more than five times the legal limit.
The man was arrested for suspected DUI, careless driving, open container and driving without a valid license.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, June 17, and Sunday, June 23, including reports of theft, injury accidents and active wrrants.
Sunday, June 23
A Walmart employee reported her phone was stolen from her car while she was at work. Deputies took a description of the device and attempted to track its location. However, the GPS did not appear to be updating.
A 23-year-old man was arrested on several charges after a Utah Highway Patrol trooper caught him speeding on S.R. 40. The car was traveling westbound near milepost 2 when a radar device confirmed he was traveling 82 mph in a 65 mph zone. Law enforcement was suspicious of the car because the high beams were on, too. The man smelled strongly of alcohol when the trooper approached. He said he had stopped drinking two hours prior. However, he performed poorly on a standardized field sobriety test. The driver was arrested for suspected DUI and transported to the Summit County Jail. He was also charged for being in possession of a stolen handgun, speeding and more.
Saturday, June 22
An individual was arrested after deputies noticed active warrants attached to a vehicle. They stopped the car and verified the driver’s identity. The individual was arrested.
A Kimball Junction business reported retail theft had occurred earlier in the day. Deputies discovered the suspect had taken merchandise and didn’t pay the full retail amount. There was no information on the suspect at this time.
A verbal argument between a couple was reported at a Newpark hotel. Deputies arrived to investigate and came in contact with a 31-year-old woman. She refused to identify herself and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Deputies arrested her, but she did not comply. They later discovered she had several major warrants for her arrest.
Friday, June 21
Deputies performed a records check on a vehicle and noticed there was a statewide warrant attached to the registered owner for traffic related charges. They conducted a traffic stop and confirmed the wanted individual was in the car. Deputies arrested the suspect and transported the individual to the Summit County Jail.
Someone reported they paid $300 on Facebook Marketplace for an item. However, they never received it. The individual provided the name, phone number and email of the seller to deputies. There was no record using the number, but deputies forwarded the case to detectives for further follow up.
Deputies were unsuccessful in an attempt to serve an individual with a civil stalking injunction. They planned to try again later.
Thursday, June 20
A Utah Highway Patrol trooper responded to a crash on westbound I-84 near milepost 114. A box truck had left the roadway and struck the cable barrier. The 40-year-old woman said she was “run off the road.” However, the woman’s movements appeared exaggerated and her speech was slow. She admitted to using meth three days prior and marijuana the day before the crash. The woman said there was a small amount of marijuana in the car. The trooper initiated a field sobriety test, which the woman performed poorly on. Drugs, including a box of new needles and a used one with testable amounts of methamphetamine, were found. The woman told law enforcement she and the passenger, a 60-year-old man, use meth. A handgun and rifle were also found in the car. The woman and man were arrested on several charges and transported to the Summit County Jail.
Tuesday, June 18
Deputies were dispatched to a vehicle accident in Tollgate Canyon. A dump truck filled with rocks was unable to make a curve, hit a rock and launched into the air. The truck flew across a small creek before it stopped against a hillside. The driver was extricated with the help of the Park City Fire District. He was transported to the University of Utah Hospital using emergency medical services via ground and air.
