The Miners football team thrashed the Tooele Buffaloes last Friday 52-21, improving to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in regional play on the season. Most importantly, the win locked up Park City’s first regional title since 2020, with one week still to go in the regular season.
While an accomplishment in the team’s first year back in 4A, they still have much loftier goals down the road. Ranked number one in this new classification, Park City certainly and rightfully has a state title in their sights.
The next step toward these goals comes on Friday evening, when the Miners will welcome a surging and strong Springville squad to Dozier Field. The visiting Red Devils will be looking to play spoiler for a Park City side that’s seeking its first undefeated regular season since 2019.
The Miners hope to continue returning to full strength before the playoffs kick off next week. They’ve recently been able to work senior signal caller Lincoln Jackson back into the starting role after some time off. But the same cannot be said for their star running back Will McCurdy, who’s been out with injury since week three.
Speaking of star running backs, Park City will have their hands full Friday with Springville’s Tevita Valeti. Valeti is one of the to backs in Utah, having gashed opposing defenses for 1,364 yards and 24 touchdowns so far this season.
The game Friday begins at 7 p.m. On Saturday morning, Park City will find out their postseason fate, alongside everyone else, when the UHSAA playoff brackets are revealed. First round games will then begin next week. The Miners are looking all but certain to receive a bye.
