The discipline of gravel biking, where riders ride and race on unpaved trails of any kind, has been growing rapidly within the cycling community. According to The New York Times, gravel bike sales more than doubled during the recent pandemic-affected period of 2019-2021. The more informal nature of the discipline’s paths and races has helped it grow in popularity. It also often holds open arms to riders of all backgrounds and disciplines.
Organizers don’t have many barriers to entry in events, equipment included. Those who have a bike and a passion to ride are welcome to sign up for even the most difficult of competitions.
Jeff Louder, a former pro cyclist who now directs the Wasatch All-Road gravel race in Heber City, encourages riders without any prior experience or specific gravel equipment to come out for his race. He believes new friendships can be forged amidst overcoming the tough challenges that his three-tiered race can pose. “It’s a really inclusive environment,” said Louder. “There’s a place for everyone in gravel racing … I would encourage people to try their hand at it.”
Louder is sure that new riders won’t be let down by the gorgeous scenery of the Wasatch Range, even if they struggle. “It’s competing against the mountain, the terrain,” he said. “You’re suffering in beautiful places.”
According to Gravel Cyclist, the biking mecca that is Park City is finally beginning to appreciate gravel biking. One Parkite who knows about the demand for its equipment and trails is Aaron Temple, the general manager at Park City Bike & Demos and an avid gravel biker himself.
Temple lauded the variety of trails within nearby areas as perfect for thrill-seeking riders. He said, “The gravel here is incredible, and there are some incredible routes that are definitely worth doing, that I would definitely recommend.” One of his favorites is the Duchesne Ridge, which he says has the most scenic biking loops.
Temple additionally described the solidarity and therapeutic nature of gravel trails. “You have this sense of adventure and disconnect from society that is unique,” he said. “It allows you to go on roads, that when you ride it, you legitimately think, ‘Well I’m the first person that’s been on this in two years.'”
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which is the governing body of competitive cycling, is clearly seeing the value too, as it just recently hosted the first Gravel World Championships last October. The event will return to the seaside region of Veneto, Italy Oct. 7-8 this year, before it heads across Europe and eventually to Australia in coming years.
