Construction on a pedestrian and wildlife tunnel underneath U.S. 40 was a contributing factor in a four-car collision Saturday, Sept. 13 near mile marker 3 on the highway, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
Two people were taken to University Hospital for “moderate injuries,” said Lt. Randall Richey, that did not appear to be life-threatening.
The crash occurred as traffic slowed as westbound U.S. 40 narrowed to one lane as cars approached Interstate 80 due to the tunnel construction, Richey said.
One car did not slow down and rammed into the back of another car, which began a chain reaction that affected four cars in all, Richey said.
Richey did not have information on the people involved or their condition.
The $2.4 million project will provide a tunnel for wildlife and pedestrian use. It is being done in a partnership with the Utah Department of Transportation, Summit County, Park City and the Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District.
