A section of Royal Street that failed last summer is scheduled to be repaired later in October, the Park City engineer reports.
In a memo to Mayor Dana Williams and the Park City Council, City Engineer Matt Cassel said testing was conducted late in the summer, with the investigation finding that road fill that had been put atop the soil slipped. The movement was worsened by lots of water underneath the surface and the road fill was compacted poorly, Cassel’s memo says.
Cassel estimates the repairs will cost approximately $200,000. Granite Construction was selected to conduct the work based on the firm’s performance on municipal projects like the reconstruction of Bonanza Drive and Hillside Avenue, Cassel said in the memo, also indicating that Granite Construction is able to work with a type of asphalt that can be put down at a colder temperature than is normal.
The memo says the work is expected to start within a week and last two or three weeks.
The section of road remains open, but barricades have been put up to keep people from driving over the damaged part of the street.
City Hall, though, is scheduled to close Royal Street in both directions between Golden Eagle Drive and Azur Way, approximately 2,112 feet, on Monday for repair work. It is anticipated the closure will last until Nov. 14. No driveways will be affected.
