One of the candidates vying for appointment to the Park City Council has withdrawn his name from consideration, saying an unforeseen medical situation in his family led to his decision.
Rory Murphy had been seen as one of the leading contenders for the City Council seat left vacant by the March death of Candy Erickson. Murphy had been one of 14 people vying for the appointment.
In a statement to The Park Record, Murphy said his 84-year-old mother underwent an emergency eye surgery this week. She lives in Vermont.
"I appreciate how everyone supported my application," Murphy said. "And I am not worried that the Council will find a good candidate based on the strength of the field that applied."
Murphy, a developer, had previously served on the Park City Planning Commission and has been involved in not-for-profit organizations. He led the team that developed Silver Star on the edge of Thaynes Canyon and had been a key figure with United Park City Mines as the firm obtained the overall development approval for the project that was later built as Empire Pass.
In his application for the City Council position, Murphy had noted his understanding of financial matters and zoning issues. He said in the application he would not have sought a full City Council term during the City Hall election later this year.
