Utah’s gas price jumps as nation’s falls

Utah’s motorists no longer enjoy the lowest average gas prices in the country, according to this week’s AAA report. Utah’s average price of $2.28, a 20-cent jump from last month, is now in the top half of the nation’s prices. Twenty-six states currently have lower prices than Utah. The national price, however, dropped three cents from last month to $2.19 for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline.

According to AAA Utah, which tracks gas prices as a service to consumers, prices have increased throughout the Intermountain West, with the only exception being Colorado. Colorado’s average price for self-serve regular gasoline dropped six cents to the current price of $2.24. Idaho’s price jumped 16 cents to $2.29. Montana’s price increased three cents to $2.21. Wyoming’s motorists are now paying an average of $2.20 per gallon. This is five cents higher than in January. Arizona’s price increased 10 cents to the current average of $2.40. Nevada’s price rose 17 cents from last month to the current average price of $2.49. California’s average price is currently $2.56, a 20-cent increase from January.

Recent world events from rioting and unrest in the Middle East to Venezuela’s threat to divert their oil exports away from the United States, have caused concern among oil and gasoline producers. As a result, refineries are blending gasoline and attempting to stockpile as much fuel as will be needed to meet consumer demand in the spring and summer, according to AAA Utah.

As prices continue to fluctuate, AAA advises consumers to shop aggressively for the lowest price. To find out about prices at more than 85,000 gas stations throughout the United States, log onto the AAA Fuel Finder at www.aaa.com/gasprices.
